Chapter 2.2
Page 2 pencils
Oh man this page was a blast to draw. I absolutely loved drawing that 3/4 angled building and the partying teenagers looks SO good.
When I drew the first chapter of the book all the establishing shots were drawn predominately front on (2d style) but I think from now on I’m going to try and include a bit more depth and angles in the composition. I think doing this will just suit the illustration style better, but it will be more work.
Also how good is the binoculars breakaway panel? I love a funny shaped panel. The dancing teenagers are so much fun, I especially like the dude with his hands up on the left and the girl throwing the bull-horns on the right (the guy she’s dancing with is a bit off, I need to redraw him- he’s so shit). I played with the composition of this a bit, I originally had some people sitting by the fire as well as dancing but in the end I wanted the scene to really scream PARTY so everyone MUST dance.
I kind of love parties in kids cartoons, where everyone rocks up and just starts senselessly dancing with zero inhibition. Now that’s just good clean fun.
I have been wrestling with whether these teens are going to be drinking booze in the story. I had a look through other comics where the characters just drink alcohol but it’s always referred to as ‘grog’, or like the Simpsons where Homer drinks Duff beer. In the end though I think I’ll make the teenagers serial soft-drinkers, I kind of think it’s funnier, them all loosing their minds on sugar and play-acting drunk. But maybe I’m just too old to find drunk teenagers that funny.
That’s all for this update,
Luv ya,
Scott
